Day 4: Monday June 14

Hello everyone

Well, I finally got a few photos to load this afternoon. It took almost 2 hours so I may wait a few days before I go through that again. :) But please know that everyone is safe and doing well.

This morning we had an early breakfast at 7 and devotion by Roger Azevedo on being courageous and trusting in God's power. We then headed back down to our favorite worksite and shoveled more dirt and moved more rocks. The kids are really amazing and have just had great attitudes despite being obviously exhausted. They all understand that we are here to serve and we have been discussing how many people will be blessed by this building for many years to come. We worked until lunch at 12:30, had a short break and then went back for about 2 more hours.

This afternoon, after an hour or so break, everyone headed out in different groups to do some door to door evangelizing. Each group had a guide from Scott along with us and all the kids were trained on how to use the Evangicubes. They did a great job and came back with alot of neat stories.

One young man that Quincy talked to accepted Christ and Quincy asked that we all pray for him to continue to grow spiritually. His name was Mutenda. Mr. Azevedo's group of Lauren, Meg and Rachel also had a couple of people come to Christ today. All of the groups met several people who were already believers who thanked them for what they were doing and several had them pray with them. Ellie had an old woman make a bee-line straight to her and ended up talking with her for quite awhile. The old woman had a sick daughter and Ellie's group was able to pray for her in the daughter's room.

We had a quick dinner and meeting and now are about to head to bed. Tomorrow we will be working again at the new chapel, doing more door to door evangelizing in the afternoon and one group of 14 will be meeting another team that has challenged them to soccer - I mean football. It was a great experience the other day being able to have a couple of our guys share testimonies afterward so they are looking forward to it again.

Also, the group is VERY excited that we are going to go pick up some Samosa's from our favorite restaurant T. Tots tomorrow for lunch. Food just makes people happy. :)

Thanks again for the encouraging messages and emails. It really helps the students to hear from home. They are GREAT kids! Sorry if this post is kind of short. I am about to fall asleep at the computer.

To Marshall, Mikayla, and Marie - it was great getting to talk to you for a few minutes on the phone! We miss you and love you!

  1. Well it certainly is a blessing getting to live vicariously through all of you. I must solicit prayer for me however, as I am also enjoying the privilege of sharing in a summer school class about Jesus nearly everyday now, with a class full of non-believers (except maybe a couple of them in there--a class of twelve), and they seem so hungry and interested in Jesus and the truth.

I have to share this--reminds me of how I've seen God work from time to time--I have a U.T. student taking my class, who "shouldn't be". He was actually enrolled at El Centro for this one summer course, who closed their version of the class due to low enrollment, and bounced him over to me...I'm "supposed" to be in Africa with you (I told him today as we talked about this...).

He is a Christian, and was needing encouragement to be bold in his faith, and share with others (unknown to me). He witnessed me sharing with students the other day in class, and every day I've shared my faith in there, he has had more and more to share (by way of, as he puts it, "jumping in"). God has brought us together to do some "tag-team" evangelism at this point, where he has been explaining the Bible's message and the fact that God wants a relationship, not interested in a new religious exercise, and he told me today in so many words that he'd been refreshed, encouraged to share, and has now nearly every day since he started has been bold in his faith to carry on dialogues with non-believers (in class with several students--it's like they're all listening and interested!!). His name is Brooks. Please if you will pray for him and I, that God will give us the words to say when the time comes to share new truths from the Word and his own testimony, and that the Lord will protect the Word planted in the hearers, and that He will glorify Himself in bringing these lost sheep in!! What a crazy beautiful thing it is to be connected like we are--for the glory of God--the salvation of souls--everywhere at all times. Miss you all and love you all! -Co-laboring brother Mr. C

  8. I look forward to reading the blog postings every day and miss Africa so much! I am always praying for the group and will continue to do so. I love hearing the great stories of how God is working in Machakos and the people there. I hope everyone stays strong and healthy. Just always remind everyone to keep their heads held high even when they are tired and worn out. The trip is over in a blink of an eye and the memories will never be forgotten. God bless and we love you!
